Obituary for Elizabeth "Betty" Haus

Elizabeth “Betty” Haus, 88, of Charles City, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Betty Haus will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Reverend Gary Mayer officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 20, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. beginning with a Rosary being prayed at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home. Visitation will continue one hour before the Mass at the church on Saturday.

Elizabeth Louise "Betty” Haus was born on October 23, 1930 in New Hampton, Iowa, the daughter of Clem and Magdalene (DeBettigness) Hackman. She graduated in 1949 from Immaculate Conception Academy in Charles City. Following high school, she began her career as a dental assistant with Dr. J. F. Hitzhusen in Charles City.

On July 24, 1954, Betty was united in marriage to Harold Haus at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Betty and Harold made their life in Charles City where they raised their three children: David, Sandra, and Howard.

Betty continued her career with Dr. Hitzhusen for 47 years. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and a member of St. Jude’s Circle and the Rosary Society, as well as a pink lady at Floyd County Memorial Hospital. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary, holding many offices at the local and district levels. Betty enjoyed bowling, camping, gardening, antiquing and going to garage sales to hunt for treasures, and watching her “story” at lunchtime, as well as the occasional “Schmidty” beer with her good friends, Marie and Marlys.

Betty always looked forward to those times she could be with all her family, and her three grandchildren had a very special place in her heart. Betty loved babysitting her grandchildren when they were younger and loved hearing about all their sports and other activities as they grew. She was a woman of faith, with the most tender heart, a warm smile and a happy laugh, and was the quiet center around which her family revolved.

Living family members include her husband: Harold Haus; three children: David of St. Paul, Minnesota, Sandra (Gregory) Hyde of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Howard (Kathy) Haus of Charles City; three grandchildren: Morgan, Alexander, and Madison, and many nieces and nephews, including the Hackmans: Vicki, Charlotte, Deb, Janice, Jeff, Lisa, Chrissy, and Sean, and most especially Pete (Debbie) Gallup and Laura Gallup.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Virgil Hackman.
